Toy-4 lbs.

The Toy Rat Terrier is a very intuitive, loving, and lively little dog made up of
the Smooth Haired Fox Terrier and the Manchester Terrier.  Originally only in
black and tan, they were first created near the 1820s in Great Britain for the
purpose of hunting small game, but they quickly gained popularity in the less
scrupulous sport of rat baiting.  They were referred to as “Feists” until they
were introduced to the United States in the 1890s.  It was Feist owner, 26th
U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, who named them Rat Terriers in after
moving into the White House in 1901.  Roosevelt adored his dogs and prided
them in being the greatest animal ever:  Skilled hunters, fearless fighters,
loving lap dogs, loyal pets, completely healthy, and loyal companions of both
adults and children as well as horses and other livestock.
Eventually, the Whippet, Beagle, Italian Greyhound, Minature Pinscher, and
Chihuahua were added to bring this breed into superior soundness and quality.
They are still today, very hard working, loyal farmhands, as well as devoted,
playful pets.  Toy Rat Terriers are quick and curious, and need daily exercise and companionship.  True to
textbook terrier disposition, they are feisty, fearless, energetic, and extremely intelligent.  They are polite,
balanced, and relatively quiet unless approached by a stranger in their own territory.
There are no known real health issues with this breed and they do not suffer
from any known congenital defects; but they do shed--unlike their hairless
variety, the American Hairless Terrier.   Genetic soundness in both health and
temperment is by far the Rat Terrier’s claim to fame-- having a very long
history of outcrosses to continually better the breed.   They require very little
grooming as their short hair requires only infrequent brushing to remove
loose hairs, and an occasional nail trim will also be necessary.   The health of a
Rat Terrier is second to none, so usually only the annual vet visit is necessary.
Rat Terriers come in many different colors as well as two very different body
types, and are not to be confused with the meaner and more troublesome
Jack Russell Terrier.  Rat Terrier color patterns can be solid, tuxedo, calicos,
tri-s, bi-s and can also have sables, brindle, or merle markings.
The Rat Terrier is primarily still a rare American breed, but is quickly on the
rise in popularity due to their undisputed genetic balance across the board.
They range in size from 3 to 35 lbs. and get along well in all types of
environments and housing.  True terriers are very inquisitive and extremely
intelligent--which means they can develop into quite skillful “escape artists”
and supervision may sometimes be necessary to ensure their safety.
As well as being brave and protective, they are also the most loving and cuddly of lap babies.   Toy Rat Terriers
are particularly good with young children and larger farm animals, and seem to love them more than anything.
They excel in family and farm companionship and are virtually maintenance free--except for annual vaccinations
and occasional nail trims.  Rat Terriers are the ultimate companion for those who prefer a balanced, intelligent,
hard working, smaller, loving, loyal, sturdy, friendly, healthy, low maintenance, and inexpensive new addition to
their family or farm.
Actual colors are black, blue, chocolate, lilac, pearl, fawn, red, mohogany,
apricots, and lemons.  The classic Type A body types are longer legged or
“deer” typed with the body and legs being of nearly equal length (squared).
The Type A is the only acceptable body type allowed in the strengthening of
their hairless variety, the American Hairless Terrier.  “Teddy Roosevelts” are
the newer Type B body type with a lot more muscle tone and extremely short,
stocky legs.   Many breeders specialize in the Teddy Roosevelt--Type B, but
AKC currently only accepts the Type A.
