Hypoglycemia is the dropping of sugar levels. The danger is when it reaches the point of no return. Regular
feedings and supplements will curb this problem until your puppy grows out of the danger stage. Attacks are
most common when they are recently weaned, upset, homesick, or under the weather. THEY MUST EAT AND
DRINK EVERY 4-6 HOURS—NO EXCEPTIONS!
Dehydration is the lack of adequate fluids. It attacks very quickly due to vomiting, diarrhea, or illness. This is
also a life threatening condition if left unattended. Pedialyte, Gatorade, or honeyed water can be administered
with a dropper—BUT A PROMPT VISIT TO A VET MAY ALSO BE NECESSARY.
Poisoning is greatly magnified in tiny pets. These animals can’t handle toxins of any kind because of their size.
Things you wouldn't think of; like moss in an artificial plant, chocolate (which is toxic to all dogs), any residue of
cleaner, disinfectants, paint chips, weeds, plants, flowers, varnish, soap, etc. The list could go on and on. Use
common sense as if with an infant/toddler in your home, but on a much smaller scale.
Canine Parvovirus and other diseases can kill your pet and leave you with enormous vet bills! Puppies are
always in quarantine until you take them to their new home, so NEVER place your puppy on the ground outside
or take it to a public place until it has had at least 3 vaccinations against disease, preferably 4. New owners
don't understand the severe danger of germs that can quickly kill their new baby; either from a person or
another pet. They are transmitted by the ground or touch. ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU HANDLE
YOUR NEW BABY AND FULLY VACCINATE YOUR PET: Then, you can take it for walks and other people can pet
it!!
Coccidia is a contagious bacterial protozoan that adheres to the lining of the large intestines and bowels. It can
quickly kill a puppy through the blood loss that occurs when this cell ruptures out from the intestinal lining, or
the dehydration that accompanies the “tell tale” bloody diarrhea. IF YOUR PUP HAS EVEN THE TINIEST DROP
OF BLOOD IN RUNNY STOOL—GO TO A VET. Veterinarians are required to check for traces of this cell before
they issue a state health certificate. Coccidia is transferred through feces, the ground, or other animals--the
same as Parvo. It most commonly infects stressed puppies; such as those going through a change of homes,
food, or sickness.
Brain Damage can occur due to any blow to the head. Some common causes are from wriggling out of a
child'sgrip, leaping off your lap, jumping off the couch, being stepped on, or falling out of bed, etc. Whatever
the reason, the result is usually sadly the same. This is especially hard on children because guilt over the
accident will haunt them forever… For the well-being of your child or any potential pet, I strongly urge a larger
breed for small children.
Venomous Creatures are everywhere, and most don’t even realize it. Snakes, toads, lizards, spiders,
centipedes and other bugs, etc. have all killed many a pet. Poisonous venom is just that, and your tiny new pet
is no match for Mother Nature. Supervise your pet at all times while outdoors -- and don’t forget that alligators
and moccasins are around lakes and rivers.
SMALLER DOGS ARE QUITE ENJOYABLE FOR MOST, AND WITH PROPER CARE AND PROTECTION, WILL BE A
TREASURED MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT MEANT
TO SCARE YOU IN ANY WAY, JUST TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF REAL DANGERS THAT COULD FACE YOUR PUP AND
HOW YOU CAN AVOID THEM. THESE THINGS LISTED ON THIS PAGE ARE REAL LIFE SITUATIONS THAT FAR TOO
MANY NEW OWNERS HAVE HAD TO FACE. IT IS MY INTENT TO SAVE YOU THE HEARTACHE OF LOSING YOUR
BELOVED PET DUE TO A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. “KNOWLEDGE IS POWER"
Birds of Prey are an unexpected threat, as the average person does not anticipate them as a lethal danger.
Smaller breeds should never be left unattended and a leash will help to keep your pet close. Bird wires and a
scarecrow can help secure a larger yard. As the natural habitat of these birds grows smaller, thousands are
displaced each year due to urbanization, natural disasters, and man made forest fires. These predators are being
forced to hunt in the suburbs and cities, so you’ll need to be on the lookout.
Adult Cats pose a huge threat as
your tiny newcomer will look like
nothing more than a rat or baby
squirrel to this natural predator. I
still recommend larger dogs for a
household with cats, HOWEVER, a
kitten will adapt to the smaller animal
without any problems. (We have 2
adult cats).
There are other dangers such as SUFFOCATION (sleeping with you), HOUSE/CAR DOORS (slamming without
looking), CHOKING (small parts), PERMANENT SOFT SPOTS (open fontanel), SLIPPING THROUGH FENCES (into
the street), and NORMAL WALKING (stepping on your pet) – just to name a brief few…

Everyone talks about how they want a cute little pup to put in their purse. This is all fine and good, and I even do so on a regular basis. However, tiny toy breeds are plagued with many hidden dangers that can suddenly end their little lives.
